Que se passerait-il si une bombe explosait sur Terre en détruisant tout sur son passage ? Tout, hormis les humains qui se retrouveraient face à une reconstruction abyssale : il faudrait tout recréer de A jusqu’à Z. De la pioche jusqu’au Smartphone, par quoi commencer ? Quelles sont les priorités ? Que voudrait-on retrouver ? A quoi devrions-nous renoncer ? Quelles sont les étapes ? Comment reconstruit-on une société à partir du néant ? Ce sont les questions qui traversent la nouvelle exposition personnelle de Léo Dorfner. CHERCHER / DÉTRUIRE.
CHERCHER à construire, à évoluer, à découvrir, à produire toujours et encore. Le genre humain est habité par un esprit de construction, d’évolution et de recherche pour d’abord se nourrir, se protéger, se réchauffer, se défendre, se déplacer ou encore se soigner et s’éduquer. Échoués sur une île déserte, les humains doivent tout refaire à partir de ce qui préexiste : construire une cabane, confectionner des vêtements, allumer un feu, remettre au point des outils (une pioche, une pelle, un marteau) pour chasser, cultiver, survivre. L’évolution humaine pousse à toujours plus de confort et de technologie, bien qu’elles soient bénéfiques sur un plan utopique, ces avancées participent aussi à la mort de notre espèce. DÉTRUIRE pour finalement reconstruire, pour transformer et une nouvelle fois évoluer et recommencer. Au moyen de formats généreux, Léo Dorfner peint et raconte cette oscillation permanente entre CHERCHER et DÉTRUIRE. Les peintures en noir et blanc résultent d’une recherche d’images glanées sur Internet faisant ainsi référence aux guerres, à la bombe atomique, aux conquêtes terrestres, maritimes et spatiales. Les peintures sont accompagnées de textes, des créations originales, mais aussi des emprunts à des romans (Georges Pérec, Michel Houellebecq), des discours de scientifiques (Kenneth Bainbridge / Maintenant nous sommes tous des fils de putes), des séries (Lost), des films (2001, L’Odyssée de l’Espace, There will be blood, Giant, Full Metal jacket) ou encore des chansons (Franz Ferdinand, Père Ubu, Iggy Pop, The Rolling Stones, Krafwerk). Aux images d’archives s’hybrident l’univers rock et underground de Léo Dorfner. L’Histoire, la littérature, l’histoire de l’art et les sciences dialoguent avec des références issues de la culture populaire. Le passé communique avec le présent pour souligner un éternel recommencement, cette boucle infernale qui relie deux actions fondamentalement humaines : CHERCHER & DÉTRUIRE. Deux actions – techniques, intellectuelles, culturelles – qui structurent l’architecture de la civilisation occidentale dont l’histoire et l’actualité sont minées de paradoxes que l’artiste s’emploie à mettre à lumière et à creuser.
What would happen if a bomb exploded on Earth destroying everything in its path? Everything, except humans who would face an abyssal reconstruction: we would have to recreate everything from scratch. SEARCH to build, to evolve, to discover, to produce always and again. The human race is inhabited by a spirit of construction, evolution and research to first nourish, protect, warm, defend, move, or heal and educate. Failing on a deserted island, humans must rebuild everything from pre-existence: building a hut, making clothes, lighting a fire, refining tools (a pickaxe, a shovel, a hammer) to hunt, to survive. Human evolution pushes ever more comfort and technology, although they are beneficial on a utopian level, these advances also contribute to the death of our species. DESTROY to finally rebuild, to transform and once again evolve and start again. Through generous formats, Leo Dorfner paints and tells this permanent oscillation between SEARCH and DESTROY. Black and white paintings are the result of a search for images gleaned from the Internet, referring to wars, the atomic bomb, land, maritime and space conquests. The paintings are accompanied by texts, original creations, but also borrowings from novels (Georges Pérec, Michel Houellebecq), scientific speeches (Kenneth Bainbridge / Now we are all sons of bitches), TV shows (Lost), movies (2001: A Space Odyssey, There will be blood, Giant, Full Metal jacket), and also the songs (Franz Ferdinand, Père Ubu, Iggy Pop, The Rolling Stones, Krafwerk). The archive images hybridize with the universe of Léo Dorfner, made of rock & roll and underground culture. History, literature, art history and the sciences dialogue with references from popular culture. The past communicates with the present to emphasize an eternal repetition, that infernal loop that connects two fundamentally human actions: SEARCH & DESTROY. Two actions - technical, intellectual, cultural - that structure the architecture of western civilization whose history and current events are mined by paradoxes that the artist strives to bring to light and to dig.
